This is a cassava field. Ngelenge is a farming village, located between lake Nyasa and the Ruhuhu river. Seasonal flooding on the Ruhuhu irrigates the crops and replenishes the soil. Cassave is a staple here. The roots are pounded into flour. It is a very hardy and drought-tolerant crop.
