Hamersley Gorge, Karijini National Park_0472

Located in the far northwest corner of Karijini, Hamersley Gorge is the most remote of all the gorges in the Park. It’s history began more than 2.5 billion years ago as iron-rich sediments were laid down on an ancient seabed. Over the course of millions of years intense horizontal pressures caused the sedimentary layers to fold and buckle as they were raised to form dry land. Subsequently a drop in sea level caused creeks and rivers to cut down through the rock, creating deep gorges and, in the process, uncovering dramatic geological formations such as those visible in the photograph above.
