Just a few kilometres out of Derby you come to the western end of the famed Gibb River Road—and to this sign. And, yes, you really are at the beginning of a very long drive across rough unfenced cattle country.

The 650 km mostly dirt road cuts right through the rugged heart of the Kimberley with its spectacular landscapes of intensely coloured ranges, dramatic gorges, rock pools and waterfalls.

The Gibb is one of Australia’s iconic road trips, and one that’s on the bucket list of pretty much everyone who’s been captivated by the romance of the great Aussie outback. With a sturdy vehicle and adequate ground clearance, the trip is not difficult. Just take notice of the sign, drive sensibly, stay alert and don’t drive at night. Whacking a brahman bull could be enough to spoil your day—or your whole trip.
