Menindee ATV_0410

This peculiar contraption, titled Menindee ATV, was originally exhibited in a local ‘Waste to Art’ competition several years ago. As is evident, it consists of a wheelbarrow equiped with a motorcycle front wheel, hand operated drum brake, coil suspension, headlights, a water bag and two-way radio—oh, and oarlocks for use in crossing the odd flooded creek. On one level it is a reference to some of the odd conveyances found around the district. A few years back, for example, two people were reported to have moved all of their worldly possessions the 200 kilometres from Wilcannia to Broken Hill in a couple of shopping carts. The work is also a nod to the fact that in the 19th century it was common for workers and would-be miners to use wheelbarrows as the preferred means of transporting their gear to the goldfields and outback pastoral leases.
