Ceramic Pot, Brickendon Cookhouse_img 0282

The cookhouse on Brickendon Estate was built in the 1830’s. Its large open fire and bread oven provided meals for all the single men on the farm.

Under the convict assignment system, detailed records had to be kept of any punishments handed out to individuals in the convict workforce (see my image 0254). On some farms convicts were punished for stealing food or complaining about rations. The fact that no such incidents were recorded at Brickendon would seem to indicate that the men there were adequately provided for.
