Terrot Motorette 3 1914* (6584)
1914 Terrot Motorette 3 - 317cc Zedel-Terrot "Motor 300" single cylinder 4-stroke engine - 3 bhp - Zedel carburettor - Bosch magneto ignition - no gearbox - belt drive - 6,5 liter fuel tank - 600x55 tires - wheelbase 49.2 inch - curb weight 80 kg - top speed 65 km/h
- built between 1912 and 1919 by TERROT & Cie, Dijon - France
Here's some extra info...*
The bike you show has no gearbox, no gears, no clutch. Its the basic model with single speed 'V' belt and pulley drive. It was a case of getting on and pedalling along until the engine fired. This had to be done every time you stopped.
A few hundred were made for the army in 1914 with a primary drive, clutch and 2 speed gearbox but were rejected and Terrot went back to the old system.
A simple clutch in the front engine pulley, a variable engine pulley (for a sort of gearing without gears) and a form of rear suspension were available but only as optional extras.
The only brake was a single shoe bicycle type on the rear pulley and a spare spark plug was fitted in a little carrier on the frame! The small wheel at the bottom between the engine and rear wheel is a belt tensioner to stop it slipping round the pulleys.
* many thanks to my British bike friend Andy :-)
