DAF 1010 Pony 1968 (9020)
Manufacturer: Van Doorne's Automobielfabriek N.V. (DAF), Eindhoven – Holland
Type: 1010 Pony
Engine: 844cc twin boxer engine air cooled (forced)
Power: 40 bhp / 4.500 rpm
Torque: 71 Nm (52 lb·ft/7.2 kgm) / 2.400 rpm
Speed: 70 km/h
Production time: 1968 – 1969
Production outlet: 700
Curb weight: 815 kg
Load capacity: 765 kg
Special:
- The Pony was developed from a failed US military tender in the mid '60, which needed a slight terrain truck.
- It is based on the DAF 44 (designed by Michelotti) with improved performance of the twin boxer engine, the well known DAF Variomatic (with automatic, two-stage centrifugal drum and two belt drive) and came as a truck (like this one) or truck / trailer combination.
- The Variomatic is a continuously variable transmission (CVT), which was developed in the fifties (1953-1958) by Hub van Doorne DAF.
- Advantage: it was the only small, affordable car with automatic transmission.
- An interesting feature: putting the car in reverse reversed the entire drive system. This enabled the vehicle, in theory, to reach the same top speed in reverse as forward.
- The 1010 has Solex Type 34 PICS carburettor, a 35 liter fuel tank, a 6-Volts electric system and rear wheel drive.
- The independent front suspension has transverse leaf springs with hydraulic double acting telescopic shock absorbers, the rear has a pendulum axle with in rubber mounted coil springs, hydraulic double acting telescopic shock absorbers and hydraulic drum brakes all around.
