The Hall of Gods
I doubt anyone can stand here taking in this natural beauty and not be transfixed and forever moved. I sure was......I'll never forget how I felt.
Maligne Lake is the largest natural lake in the Canadian Rockies. Ringed by snow-and-ice-capped mountains, the 13.7 mi (22 km) long lake stretches past serene Spirit Island right to the melt-water channels of Coronet Glacier.
The colour of the water is different at Spirit Island than where cruises depart at the Maligne Lake docks. The further south on the lake you travel, the closer you get to glaciers, and the more emerald-coloured the water becomes due to the presence of rock flour from the glaciers.
Maligne Lake was originally known as "Chaba Imne" (Beaver Lake) by the Indigenous people who lived in Jasper. In 1907 Mary Schaeffer, a wealthy Quaker from Philadelphia, learned of the mysterious lake. Following a map obtained from Samson Beaver, Mary explored the valley and lake and later wrote about her adventures, making the area a popular tourist attraction in years to follow. She called the box canyon where it sits “the Hall of Gods”. In comparing it to another place she knew well, she said “If Lake Louise is a pearl, Maligne is the entire pearl necklace.”
