Happy Birthday Nona!
Today is Nona Hendryx's birthday.
Nona Hendryx was born October 9, 1944 in Trenton, New Jersey and is a vocalist, record producer, songwriter, musician, author, and actress.
Nona was one of the members of Patti Labelle and the Blue Belles which later went on to become the trio Labelle. Nona was the main writer of most of the Labelle songs starting with their second album Moonshadow. I have pretty much all of her solo releases and I currently keep her Skindiver CD in my player in the bedroom all the time.
It is said that four tracks for an upcoming Labelle album to be released in 2008 have been recorded. So it seems as though Sarah, Nona, and Patti will be re-united, at least on CD.
I realized years after Labelle broke up that it was Nona's lyrics that attracted to me to the group and kept me sane through out my last years in high school. Her lyrics still give me a lot to think about even today. What a thrill it was to actually meet her so many times. Big thanks to Patti for letting me meet her that fateful day, and for letting me "steal" the Skindiver CD from her. :-)
