Bruges Sint-Jans-Hospitaal 19th-century hospital and old Mediëval

The 19th-century hospital complex, after the 1991 restoration.

St John's Hospital from 1864. A central corridor on the semi-underground floor, leading to the individual wards.

With the evolution of time and a new outlook on patient care and hygiene, new buildings became a necessity from the mid-19th century onwards. A hospital with 16 wards and a main building was erected in 1864, around an inner garden. The plans were by architect Isidoor Alleweireldt (1824-1892). For its construction, the brewery, a large part of the garden and the cemetery of the historic hospital had to disappear.
