Banks Peninsula: Stony Bay (1)
Stony Bay is a family-owned property on the stunning Canterbury area of Banks Peninsula.
The property has been in the family since the 1870s, with the landowners implementing a philosophy of conservation since 1975.
The on-farm business activities are diverse, from pastoral farming to private walking tracks eg: Banks Track, established in 1989 as New Zealand’s first private track.
The property is a key habitat for little blue penguins nesting in the bay. It also has the last remaining mainland sooty shearwater colony and one of the few remaining populations of spotted skinks.

The snaking gravel Stony Bay Road takes you from Akaroa, over the spine of the peninsula and down through farmland to a farmhouse. There, you request permission to walk a few hundred metres to the stony bay itself (no soft sand here!).
No dogs allowed, as this is a working farm and protected habitat, and no campers...a great day out, exploring 'our own backyard'!
