The building was originally Meeks Grain Elevator, built in 1883 for the grain traders and millers J. & T. Meek. Oamaru was at that time a flourishing sea port, and bigger than Los Angeles!
The 5-storey building was the only one of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere at the time. It was the first elevator building in the Southern Hemisphere. It had the specific purpose of handling and storing grain, based on the American principle of self-emptying bins. In 1920 the top two storeys were destroyed in a spectacular fire.
