Valle Aurina, Alto Adige, Castello di Tures - Ahrntal, Sud Tirol, Schloss Taufers
Originally owned by the Lords of Taufers, the nobles and dynasties, and since the 1215 by the ministerial church bishops of Bressanone, it was converted into a residential house in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries.
After a period of decline, the castle has been put back on track after World War II by the Benedictine Hieronymus Gassner, a native of Ybbsitz Lower Austria. Since 1977 the castle was bought by Südtiroler Burgeninstitut ("South Tyrolean Institute for the maintenance of the castles"). Today is one of the most interesting medieval castles of the autonomous province of Bolzano. In all there are 64 rooms, about 24 of which are made entirely of wood. There are frescoes in the chapel of the school of Michael Pacher. Also interesting are the armory, the library, the room of the principles (the Fürstenzimmer) and the courtroom. In the basement there is a prison. The castle can be visited on specific days and up from time to time exhibitions and concerts.
