21st century menhir
Made from steel. Long-lasting. If not removed by human force, this monument could stand here on top of the Dunstable Downs for many centuries. Just like our neolithic standing stones. Telling the world, if there is anybody left to see, that we have been here. Had a life, had memories, sad and happy ones. We have been here. We may only guess what the "function" of the standing stones erected five thousand years ago might once have been. But we do know what the function of this steel menhir is: it actually is a "Wind Catcher", a piece of ecological engineering pumping fresh air into a building about a hundred meters away. However, there is much more to this monument than usefulness. It is overlooking Aylesbury Vale. It is a marker, time- and space-wise. We have been here.
