Looking back (2)

Ignore what Flickr tells you about the date this photo was made. I did this shot in August 1979 (with a point and shoot camera and, of course, still with film). The place is an extremely hot and dark factory hall in Sivakasi, Tamil Nadu, India. Matches were manufactured here, almost exclusively by children. I am not commenting as I think I have published this image before under the title "A good day in the making of the Indian bourgeoisie". I want to talk about photography. In those years, my profession took me to various continents and photography secured one part of the materials I collected. In other words, my perspective then was all about the documentation (not "art", "composition" or so) of social life. That is a very laudable purpose. I just wish I had taken these images with more care (and a better camera).
