Concrete Creatures (3)

You would find them in many and perhaps in most of our gardens (mine included). Of course, the garden centres sell them, but why do they and why do we buy such sculptures of children holding a water-spouting fish or that urn with wild men's faces looking at you? It is also true that we have inherited the forms and shapes of these figurines from antiquity and that they re-appeared in the gardens of the rich and the educated particularly from the 18th century on. The garden itself is a kind of alternative world, one of beauty, peace and with space for fantasy. It is therefore not fully controlled by rationality. There are even corners where the uncanny (das Unheimliche) has its place.
