Fascist New World

Not everything in Porto is what it seems. The baroque "Pelourinho" (Schandpfahl, pillory) was built in the 1940s in order to give credibility to Salazar's "Estado Novo". In order to create the square in front of the old (originally Gothic) Cathedral (to the right) old living quarters were razed. I do not think that the Church put up any resistance.
