A new public promenade for pedestrians and cyclists has now been created on the bank of the Rhine River between St. Johanns Park and the French border, which was previously the site of a closed harbor area. The promenade is the result of nine years of planning and constructions.
The over 600-meter-long promenade between the Rhine and the Novartis Campus is only ten 10 to 30 meters wide, but overcomes a height of up to 10 meters. The design is based on the current. The walls needed to bridge the difference in heights take up the oscillating movement and continue it in the path areas. The integrated steps and ramps are interwoven with the walls in a nearly natural manner and create interconnections between the individual levels. The concrete walls are faced with vertically arranged, fractured bands of limestone, and thus give the riverbank section a warm, textile-like appearance. The flowing of the water is finds a continuation in the bordering walls. The promenade is structured into two path levels: the flood-safe, four-meter-wide promenade path has graveled, ecologically valuable niches with trees and benches for spending time. The level near the water, which is not flood-safe, forms a berm path, as is typical in Basel. Options for swimmers to enter and leave the Rhine as well as showers provide an attractive offer in the summer months.
