Shooting with my old-ish AF-S Nikkor 55-300mm f4.5-5.6 had it's restrictions on absolute clarity at full stretch, but it did deliver some pleasant color and bokeh. The manual focusing ring however is a joke, and seems like a poorly designed after-thought. It requires a lot of effort to nail the details when hand holding, so in frustration I elected to use autofocus most of the time.
