Belated HNY greetings friends !
Sorry for my absence and lack of input on your posts - losing one's photo mojo after my mother passed away and a Christmas infection laid me low, required finding a new toy to play with to invigorate it again!
Using a cheapish Neewer NW-14EXT Macro Ring Lite set at a power output of 1/128th, and holding the flash off-the-lens on manual mode at f1.8 provided me with some reasonable macro captures.
A degree of trial and error is required to achieve a decent exposure, but shooting in raw provided more latitude for post-image adjustments. I had thought this type of flash would be a bit of an image killer, resulting in rather bland even lighting, but used experimentally, and at an effective angle, the results have been rather pleasing.
I used three extension tube rings, coupled with my AF Nikkor 50mm f1.8D to make the shot, hand held.
