Haarlem has many interesting and wonderful places to have a drink and a meal but one of my favorite areas is the Riviervischmarkt and this trio of places pictured here has been on my frequent stop list for many years serving great Japanese, Spanish tapas and great drinks out of an old fish mongers location.
The people of Haarlem believed that seafood had a greater stench than river caught fish so they had two fish markets one for seafood well away from the center and the river fish market just below St Bavo’s church until the early 17th century.
They call Haarlem the city of flowers but in truth they should have called it the city of beers, for over 500 years the city has been a beer hub and once home to over 100 local breweries but by the late 18th century as industrialization came into being craft beers almost disappeared to factory beer.
One little odd fact about Haarlem is that its citizens are called “de muggen” or mosquitoes in English this was due to a 500 year old insult whose origin has been lost in the sands of time
I took this on Sept 13th, 2017 with my D750 and Nikon 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6 Lens at 32mm 1/6 sec f/16 ISO100 processed in LR, PS +Lumenzia, Topaz , Luminar and DXO
