From the Vaults-45

Not a whole lot of Amersfoort’s first city walls is left standing but this northern city gate is one of the originals called the Viepoort or Martenspoort it is the oldest gate in Amersfoort dating to the 13th century and was renamed to Kamperbinnenpoort in the 15th century after the completion of the second city wall defense system.

The original name was Viepoort because it was a cattle gate used to put the city stock to pasture with the Martenspoort as a secondary name because of the grazing grounds outside of it owned by monks of the St Martin’s Abbey from Utrecht,

Kamperbinnenpoort came about after the completion of the second wall when a Kamp or field was created between the old and new city walls.

This picture of the gate is taken from the Kamp side which would have faced outwards from town you can see the six throwing holes above the arch this design as well as looking good served a purpose as pour holes for molten pitch to rain down on invaders if they tried to breach the gate.

I took this on September 20, 2017 with my D750 and Nikon 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6 Lens at 35mm 1/25s, f/13 ISO 100 processed in LR, PS +Lumenzia, Topaz Denoise, Luminar and DXO

Disclaimer: My style is a study of romantic realism as well as a work in progress.
