Alluring Aliano-7
Every year, on the day of Shrove Tuesday, singular figures wander through the streets of Aliano, are the "horned" masks that animate the Carnival.
"They came in great leaps, and screamed like angry animals, exalting their own screams. They were the peasant masks ". Carlo Levi also recalls in his "Christ stopped at Eboli" the "Fras", an improvised comedy, in a dialectal form on facts and characters of the local reality, of which the extravagant horned masks are the protagonists. They evoke demonic and awkward creatures, whose threatening character is mitigated by the colorful hats that decorate their heads.
Forged from clay and papier-mâché, with the skilful work of local craftsmen, the masks are painted and on the front side emerge pronounced horns and huge hanging noses. At the top of the hats is a hole decorated with a rooster pen, while all around colored filaments come down like curls. The figures thus parade through the village moving to the sound of accordions and dark gloomy. Unique in their strangeness, the masks of Aliano bear witness to a tradition that has remained unchanged over time.
