Bearded Tit (Panurus biarmicus)
Bearded Tits do not belong to the same family of birds that includes Blue and Great Tits. They are more correctly referred to as Reedlings.
Found exclusively in reed beds, they can be frustrating birds to see well as they make their way through the reeds feeding on insects and seeds.
At Westhay Moor NNR, where this male was photographed, they appear on the boardwalk to the Island Hide where they come to ground in early autumn to take grit. This is at the time when they are changing their diet from insects to seeds and is an aid to digestion of this new food source.
