Bellini, the 'unequalled melodist'

Catania in Sicily is the birthplace of Vincenzo Bellini (1801-35), the renowned operatic composer whose most famous work is Norma. Verdi described his melodies as unequalled, and Liszt and Chopin were also among his admirers.

Bellini died from an intestinal inflammation at the shockingly young age of 33, and is buried in St Agatha’s cathedral, Catania. This statue, sculpted by Giulio Monteverde, is in the nearby Piazza Stesicoro.
