Peter Taylor CBE

I’m delighted beyond measure to say that my dear friend and erstwhile colleague, the author and television journalist Peter Taylor, has been appointed a CBE in the King’s New Year Honours. His well-deserved award is for services to journalism and to public broadcasting, and I couldn’t be happier to hear this news.

Peter (on the left, holding a BAFTA award – see later) reported frequently on the murderous ‘Troubles’ in Northern Ireland during the 1970s, and he consequently became a trusted ‘go-to’ specialist on the subject. He went on to make many further television documentaries on conflicts and terrorism around the world, and is still much in demand for his expertise.

He and I – that’s me on the right – met at Thames Television in 1969, and we’ve been friends as well as colleagues ever since. I worked with him on many of the Northern Ireland programmes as well as on other subjects, including conflicts in the Middle East and a spate of aircraft hijackings.

Peter’s CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) is a fine recognition of the quality of his work over six decades. And his *BAFTA Special Award, presented in 2014, is one of the academy’s highest honours, recognising his outstanding contribution to factual and current affairs television.
