Lisbon: Avenida da Liberdade

Lisbon’s Avenida da Liberdade (Freedom Avenue or Independence Avenue) must surely be one of Europe’s finest boulevards. It was created in 1879-82 in the style of the Champs-Elysees in Paris, and its tall elegant trees provide welcome shade for walkers, cyclists and people relaxing at café tables or by fountains. Many of the buildings along the way are in the Art Nouveau style (such as this one), which adds an extra delight for the visitor.

The statue here is of Oliveira Martins (1845-94), a politician and social scientist who worked for Portugal’s leading literary, scientific, political and socialist journals. He was considered to be one of the key figures in the contemporary history of Portugal, and his work influenced generations of writers, including today’s.
