Fred Hutton, October 1958

Another one from the archive… this is Fred Hutton, one-time deputy head and maths teacher at Banstead County Secondary Boys School in Surrey, which did its best to educate me in the late 1950s. I took the photograph outside the school gates in October 1958, shortly before he retired (and I later asked him to sign it for me because I was keen on handwriting and autographs at the time... I still am).

Away from school, Mr Hutton was a keen supporter of Sutton United football club, which is still going strong. On seeing this portrait, Derek Hoskin, a pupil at the school a few years before me, remarked, “In those days, If he was smiling on a Monday morning, we knew Sutton United had won.” This must have been a Monday morning!
