THE WAY, THE TRUT
Here’s another image from my archive.
In June 1966, the American Baptist evangelist Billy Graham came to London for one of his extraordinary ‘crusades’. Graham was a powerful, inspirational and thrilling speaker, as any newsreel will attest.
In 1966 he took over the vast Earls Court building in London, and every night for a month the place was packed to the gunnels with the faithful and the curious, who flocked in coachloads and chartered trains from all over the UK to hear him speak.
I was one of the curious, and being a 22-year-old reporter in a London suburb, it was easy to go along to one of his crusades – which weren’t without controversy, attracting accusations of demagoguery and mass hysteria in the national headlines. Whether that was so or not, the event (which attracted 18,000 people a night) was quite a spectacle; free entertainment on a grand scale for some, but a time for renewal of faith for others. Here’s my photograph of the night I went to see Billy Graham (it's a print from a now lost 35mm transparency).
PS: 'THE WAY, THE TRUT'... not exactly my most successful attempt at framing, but never mind!
