Chào mừng bạn đến Việt Nam!
Well, here we are in the Socialist Republic of Vietnam – or Cộng hòa xã hội chủ nghĩa Việt Nam, if you prefer.
Leaving aside the small matter of the American War between 1955 and 1975, Vietnam was largely isolated until the mid-1980s – but now this one-party socialist state, where the Communist Party rules supreme, has opened up to become a thriving tourist destination, and although still a hugely poor country, its economic growth rate is among the highest in the world.
Some 13 million people visited the country last year… and this year, Liang and I decided to add to the numbers. It’s a country of contrasts, as I hope to show in the coming days.
