A helping hand...

Orval Abbey – l’Abbaye Notre-Dame d’Orval – in southern Belgium has been a Cistercian monastery since 1132. It’s still a thriving community, not to say tourist attraction, and it’s also embracing ancient and modern to good effect.

This, for example, is one of a group of modern sculptures in the historic grounds. Entitled ‘Entraide’ (in English ‘Help’; in Dutch ‘Hulpbetoon’), it’s by the Belgian sculptor Camille Colruyt (1908-65), and was inspired by the parable of the good Samaritan. The sculpture fits astonishingly well against its ancient backdrop.
