Walmer Castle
by Peter Brun
Walmer Castle. Built by Henry VIII as part of a chain of defences against invasion from the Continent. It is the official residence of the Warden of the Cinque Ports. Over history different Wardens have spent a lot of time there or very little. The Duke of Wellington spent a lot of time there as did Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother. I would imagine that Robert Menzies, ex PM of Australia who followed Winston Churchill in this role, would probably not have spent much time there. The Castle is now in the care of English Heritage and is well worth a visit not just for the Castle but for its extensive grounds which include well manicured gardens and more natural woodland walks with play areas for children.
