The Balliol Heart Shrine. East Brabourne
John Balliol's heart was embalmed and, in a casket of Ivory and silver, was carried by his grieving wife wherever she went. It was buried with her, when she died, in Sweetheart Abbey near Dumfries. Their son, also John, later transfered the heart to this shrine because of family connections and because it was safe in charge of the Cluniac Monks who owned the church at the time. The shrine is now empty and it is not clear what became of the heart.
