Salad on the Side

Rough-legged Hawk (Buteo lagopus) - Lawrencetown, Nova Scotia

This hawk took away some roughage along with its vole. When these hawks strike above the dunes, I have noticed them do a small dance (tomorrow's photo) after the landing. I presume this is to ensure the catch is in its claws, and the dance feels around for the 'squirming and escaping'.

Often times those sharp talons take along a few pieces of grass with the catch, in this case it was a sizable divot. The catch was made on an embankment, and the background is the Atlantic Ocean.

Thanks for visiting!
