Essoldo, Sowerby Bridge
Opened as the Regent Cinema on 28th December 1939, the theatre had a dance hall attached to the building. Taken over by the Essoldo Cinemas chain in March 1949, and re-named Essoldo, the cinema eventually closed on 4th February 1967 with Elvis Presley’s “GI Blues” and Jerry Lewis headlining “The Caddy”.
After laying unused for several years, the building was converted into a nightclub in 1972 and after that closed, the auditorium was used as an indoor market for a while, until it was demolished in 1987 with just the front of the building retained. Currently the premises provide a home for various retail businesses which form Regent Parade.
