Pileated Woodpecker - Grand Pic

A couple of weeks ago I posted an image of a Northern Flicker working away at the edge of the woods on the ground - digging away for insects. While that is their typical way of finding food, they are not unique among Woodpeckers in that respect. Pileated Woodpeckers are bog ground-based insectivores, and a male was working hard last weekend along the grass near the entrance to a local wildlife area. Late afternoon light and the absence of people gave me about fifteen minutes to hang out with the bird as it circled some trees and moved out into the open. And lying down didn’t involve muck! Just some Canada Goose poop, which is everywhere here now.
