Weddell Seals

Weddell seals haul out onto the still persisting sea ice to pup. They have minimal fear of people and it is possible to approach mother and pup really closely before they become upset. In this image, there is no trick photography and no tele-photo lenses. I walked across the sea ice with my cheap fixed lens camera, sat down by the mother and pup, and took some photographs from all of a metre or two. Usually the problem was not panic, but getting them to do something other than snore...
