LBLR in the 1960s (31 of 53)

Arnolds' No.42 (MR 7710) crawls up the steep gradient of Marley's Bank with a loaded train. The rear of the train is just clear of an occupation crossing which connected two areas of the tile company's yard.

The full load for a main line 40 h.p. loco was 24 wagons. It was normal practice to leave half the train at the foot of this bank, take the first half up the bank, leave it in Stanbridge Road loop at the top and return light engine for the second half. However, provided the rails were completely dry, a good driver, by keeping his loco in bottom gear all the way from the foot of the bank, could haul all 24 up in one go! 20/9/1961
