Pete Arnold1
LBLR in the 1960s (40 of 53)
Arnolds' No.42 (MR 7710) crossing Billington Road heading a load of washed sand; another loco is out of sight acting as banking engine at the rear of the train. The large buildings on the right are Garsides' drying and bagging plant.
Visible down the road in the distance are the level crossing gates and cottage where the BR Dunstable branch crossed the road.
This train of washed sand would climb up to Pages Park loop before dropping back down the gradient parallel with the road to reach the further area of loops. The washed sand would then be taken across Billington Road again, nearer to the BR level crossing, up to the gantry for tipping into standard gauge wagons. 20/9/1961
