LBLR in the 1960s (38 of 53)

Here we see Arnolds' No.42 (MR 7710) bringing its loaded train in to the centre track at Pages Park loops. Officially the line nearest the camera was for Garsides' use and the far one for Arnolds'.

Normal practice for trains would be for the loco to run round the train, couple on to the rear end and wait for another loco to come on the head end. The train would then take one of two routes depending upon the type of sand being carried.

An Arnolds' train might proceed straight ahead, steeply downhill, cross Billington Road and then round a very sharp right curve to reach the washing plant.

Alternatively the train might take the left curve, down past the original LBLR loco sheds, to reach another area with more loops alongside the newer loco shed. The train would then be split into smaller sections and taken across Billington Road and up onto the gantry for the load to be tipped into wagons on the BR standard gauge siding below.

Garsides' trains would also take this left curve but, after passing the original LBLR loco sheds, would take a track to the right which also crossed Billington Road to enter their drying and bagging plant.

When still a separate company LBLR were responsible for all tracks on the east side of Billington Road including, but not beyond, the three level crossings. 20/9/1961
