Pete Arnold1
LBLR in the 1960s (29 of 53)
In fading light this was the scene at about 4.20 p.m. on 8th January 1962 immediately after a spectacular derailment of part of a Garsides' loaded train on Marley's Bank caused by broken couplings.
Rather than rely upon the "dud loop" points at the foot of this gradient, Garsides' used a derailing bar which was dragged along behind the rear wagon. On this occasion, when a coupling broke, it worked well because just the last 3 or 4 wagons were derailed. However, whilst the loco was pulling the rest of the train to the loop at Stanbridge Road, another coupling broke - possibly caused by a bad gear change - and more wagons ran back resulting in a total of 7 wagons being derailed. The crew of the following Arnolds' train were also late home as the line was not cleared until about 7.30 p.m. 8/1/1962
