Double Arches - November 1966
A general view of the sand washing and screening plant area at Double Arches looking to the north. The train in the foreground is heading out with a load of screened sand for Stonehenge Brickworks.
Both sand washing plants discharged to storage piles seen at the upper right of this view. The ramp immediately behind the loco went up to the feed hopper for the larger of the two washing plants whilst the track leading off behind the middle of the train led to the feed hopper for the smaller, and older, washing plant.
At centre left a curved track comes into the photo and this brought trains to/from the 'top' pit. Above this curve a ramp went up to the screening plant feed hopper, under the corrugated tin roof, where a train is tipping its load. Loaded trains normally took 6 wagons up the north ramp as the south ramp was much steeper.
In the distance, behind the screening plant, can be seen the loco shed and workshop to the right of which a double track went down to the 'bottom' pit.
The two tracks running off to the lower left of the photo led to the gantry for loading lorries in Eastern Way. The three sand drying and bagging plants were located in the rest of the area off the bottom of the photo.
