NYC financial district and twin towers from near Brooklyn bridge, 1999, with story from 2011

December 1999. Minolta. Camera either SRT or X-300; lens either Kiron 28/2 or Tamron SP 24-48. Film probably Kodachrome 64. I was with my brother Jonny, and it was cold. We had walked from his then home somewhere in Brooklyn. I think it was a Sunday afternoon.

There is an interesting story attached to this shot...well actually not a particularly interesting one, but one which I wish to tell.

Pace University, whose building is pictured in the centre of the frame, last year (2011) asked me to license it to them so they could exhibit it and use it on I think two websites. I went to some trouble to sign, scan and email forms for them and there was extensive email correspondence (with three people in total) which included, at one point, some rather pushy talk from one of them of their deadlines. I asked for no payment and signed a form granting them use of my image.

I then realised that I did not actually have any access to the original image file at the time due to a hard disc failure and my flickr pro membership having lapsed. No problem, said the man with deadlines, and I renewed my pro membership on the clear and agreed understanding that the organisation would pay for it. After dutifully making screen prints showing my payment I waited for them to arrange to make payment.

They simply never did so, even after several prompts. In the end they simply ignored my emails. I have typed "they", but in fact it is one specific individual employee. His post is called "Executive Director of Public Information". I would certainly be less generous about licensing a photo to this organisation in future, and I will be more circumspect and less compliant when dealing with other organisations as a result.
