Emergency Power Generator

An Old Veteran Awaits the Call

In the casemate adjacent to the North Bastion, we find this aged veteran waiting for its recall to duty. I never saw this particular space while I was working at Fort Trumbull at the Naval Undersea Systems Center, but the interior of the Fort was configured differently then; with the casemates enclosed and walls erected in places since returned to their open structure. I do not know if this generator is an artifact of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy era, the Merchant Marine Academy, Columbia University, University of Connecticut or the U.S. Naval Underwater Sound Lab. So many masters…

I tried to shoot this with three different exposures before I switched on an interior light to get the right backlighting. The electrical switchgear to the right has meters to measure voltage, current and frequency. It allows the operator to switch from mains power to the emergency generator and back with minimal disturbance -- and prevents 'brownout' conditions while the engine comes up to speed. Dingo48 said he couldn't tell me whether the engine is gasoline or diesel without a close inspection. If it is diesel, it is probably in good enough condition to bring online, in the event of a power emergency, with a minimum of service.
