Beginnings

For me, capturing this photo was more than just a snap of the theater on Hennepin and Lagoon...

Life on earth has an uncanny way of breaking apart at the seams when we "least expect it." Emotionally, Financially, Physically; one day we're singing joy off of rooftops, and the next it's all dark grey, vacant. Caught with our naked backs to the spear, and the wind at our face, we fall. At the bottom, it seems an eternity, like swimming through mud, without direction.

But then, laying down, just as you press your head to the concrete, a lone bulb flickers at the edge of the marquee. Zip zip zip, buzz. Somehow light stays in the old amber glass, and then just as quickly, it stops.

You go on the next few days feeling something new. Filaments have long been known to spontaneously "ghost spark" long after they split from exhaustion. You don't tell anyone, but you know it now; the theater will soon thrive once again. It is now just a matter of time before the lights shine bright and the show goes on.

There is something special about new beginnings. They give us hope. Hope is what gets us through the next swim.
