Nautical ATC, 3.5x2.5 in.

OK. I really love this piece, It's probably my favorite ATC I've done, and probably the most difficult one I've done, (This is actually the 3rd and final attempt), and it's definitely the one I'm the most proud of. I'm kind of sad to see it go! :( Even though this is a teeny tiny piece, there's a lot going on here, so I'll try to explain the concept.

All of my pieces over the last 7-8 years involve postage stamp formats commemorating "celebrities/famous people". For example, Britney Spears isn't really famous, Medusa is, and then celebrating those mythic people and ideas in the form of commemorative postage stamps. The concept started as wood block prints but for the last year or so I've been doing them as embroideries. It's a deliberate choice playing on the idea of "spinning a tale" or "following the thread of a story."

So the theme for this swap was "Nautical" and I thought of concept of ships disappearing over the horizon and how that started to prove the idea of a spherical earth, or the fear of falling off the edge of the earth and "here there be monsters" and so forth. So I thought it be kind of funny to do a stamp celebrating The Flat Earth Society. How consistently in the face of basic observation they are CONVINCED the earth is flat. 3000+ members worldwide convinced!

And how that seemed hauntingly topical in todays climate. So anyway, "Zetetic Astronomy" is their contribution to the long list of fakey-made-up pseudo-science that seems to be making a strong comeback. Anyway, sorry to be so long winded.

***Please also understand that this is not any kind of attack on anyones personal beliefs (except for FlatEarthers) or faith. Everyone's entitled to their opinions and personal truths, I'm just assuming 99.99999% of us can agree that the world is round, and it would never even occur to most of us to debate that, just like we wouldn't seriously debate if the moon was made of cheese, or that 75 million years ago Xenu brought billions of people to Earth in spacecraft resembling Douglas DC-8 airliners, stacked them around volcanoes and blew them up with hydrogen bombs.
