Beginnings and Endings

As a birthday gift to myself I visited Whitman Mission yesterday. The most remarkable sights were the ones I missed: no matter how many times I waited for that fish to jump again in the pond, the fish only jumped when my back was turned or the camera wasn't pointed at him. The sounds at the mission are remarkable. I heard hawks calling, turkeys sounding off, the rushing water at the pond runoff drain, and the whirring of pheasant's wings as they flew away from my camera. I saw a small deer with very large ears peering at me through the orchard and he was gone by the time I raised my camera.

I go to the mission to heal my soul and I am always rewarded with a new sight or sound that lends peace to my day. I can't explain it, but I feel a powerful connection to the residents of Waiilatpu though most of them died nearly 100 years before my birth. Their legacy is this place of beauty left for all to enjoy.
