Bowes Museum [Explored]
The Bowes Museum is an art gallery in Barnard Castle, County Durham, built for John Bowes and his wife Josephine and opened in 1892 to house their vast art collection.
It contains paintings by El Greco, Goya, Canaletto, Fragonard and Boucher, together with items of decorative art, ceramics, textiles, tapestries, clocks and costumes.
There is an eighteenth century silver swan automaton, which when wound up preens itself, looks around and appears to catch and swallow a fish.
