Hoar Cross - Church of the Holy Angels
Hoar Cross is a masterpiece of the Gothic Revival, designed by the Victorian architect G.F. Bodley and his partner Thomas Garner, with work beginning in 1872.
Their client was Emily Meynell Ingram, daughter of Lord Halifax, whose husband of seven years had been killed in a hunting accident. She commissioned the church both as his memorial and as a citadel of Anglo-Catholicism, to which Bodley was also attached.
The exterior is a superb work of Decorated revival, while the interior is Victorian High Gothic with all the trimmings.
Holy Angels was consecrated in 1876, although further works took place until the church achieved its present form in 1906.
It is a Grade I listed building.
