Much Marcle - St Bartholomew's Church
The architecture of the church is 13th century and although there is evidence of a church at Much Marcle at the time of the Norman Conquest, it was not necessarily on this site.
The church was restored in 1875-8 under the supervision of the architect Ewan Christian. He was architectural adviser to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners from 1850 and supervised many important buildings including the National Portrait Gallery in London.
St Bartholomew's is of considerable architectural and historical interest; it has some of the finest effigies in South Herefordshire, and includes the famous Grandison tomb of Blanche Mortimer.
The nave and chancel date from about 1220.
